4 Diet Tips for Australian Kelpies

2 Minutes Posted on:

Australian kelpies are intelligent, hardworking, energetic dogs that are used to herd sheep on farms across the nation. With such high energy requirements, Kelpies require a healthy diet to keep them in top condition. These tips can help you feed your dog as healthily as possible.

1. Feed Kelpies Regular Meals

Feeding your dog on a regular schedule can help reduce behavioural problems and maintain energy levels. Some adult Australian kelpies can manage on just one meal each day, but many prefer to eat twice, once before they start the day's work and then again in the evening.

If you are raising a kelpie pup, feed them four times a day until they are 12 weeks old. This feeding schedule ensures that their small stomachs can take in enough calories and nutrients to support their growing bodies. Gradually reduce the number of meals per day until your kelpie is a year old.

2. Select the Correct Foods

The basis of your Australian kelpie's diet should be a high-quality dry dog food. High-quality brands of dog food contain high levels of nutrients essential for dog health, including vitamin B12 and iron.

In addition to dry dog food, you can add some other foods to your dog's diet. Australian kelpies love meat, bone marrow, wet dog food and eggs. Vegetables can also be a great dietary addition, particularly for kelpies with sensitive stomachs. Add some cooked squash, sweet potato or carrots to your kelpie's food and the soluble fibre will help to settle any indigestion.

3. Don't Forget About Water

Kelpies love to spend time working or playing in the hot sun, which can lead to dehydration. Make sure your dog always has access to clean, fresh water so they can take a drink whenever they need to.

4. Do Not Overfeed or Underfeed

Australian kelpies typically have a large appetite, which can mislead some owners into overfeeding their dogs. Keep an eye on your kelpie's bodyweight to ensure they are not becoming overweight, which carries serious health risks for dogs just like it does for humans. Male kelpies ideally weigh between 15 and 20kg, whereas healthy females weigh between 11 and 16kg. Due to a kelpie's thick coat, it can be difficult to tell whether they are carrying too much fat, so be sure to have regular checkups with a veterinarian to make sure your dog is in the healthy weight range for their size.
